Faculty and Staff Receive College and University Awards

Three Department of Computer Science faculty and staff members have received well-deserved awards from Iowa State University and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Wallapak Tavanapong designs and develops new AI-assisted methods that accurately analyze biomedical data. This work could potentially improve computer science and biomedical research practice and patient care. Tavanapong also mentors graduate and undergraduate students who are conducting research in this area.
The Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business, in partnership with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will offer a master of financial technology. The degree is a collaboration between the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Finance, and the Department of Information Systems and Business Analytics.
Dr. Myra Cohen, Professor of Computer Science and the Lanh and Oanh Nguyen Chair in Software Engineering, has received the 2025 Barbora Bühnová Leadership Award for Women in Science and Engineering from the IEEE Computer Society Technical Council on Software Engineering. The prestigious award is given to Dr. Cohen for her seminal and innovative research on combinatorial interaction testing and her exceptional record of one-on-one mentoring.
The ICPC North Central North America (NCNA) Regional Programming Contest took place on Saturday, November 14. 95 teams from across the region participated.
One of our undergraduate academic advisors for computer science students, Snow Gray, presented at the Iowa Academic Advising Network (IowaAAN) conference on September 18th.
Shu-Hui (Susan) Chang has been awarded the Quality Matters (QM) and the CELT High-Quality certifications for COM S 1060: Introduction to Web Programming.
Kristine Loes, a Cost Center Manager for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at Iowa State University, has been awarded the 2024 LAS Institutional Service Award at the LAS Fall Convocation and Awards on September 12, 2024.
Professor Myra Cohen, Lanh and Oanh Chair in software engineering, gave a keynote talk in July in Porto de Galinhas, Brazil, at the ACM International Conference on the Foundations of Software Engineering (FSE).
Zili Wang, a first-year Computer Science Ph.D. student, has been awarded the prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship award. He is currently working with Professor Kristin Yvonne Rozier at the Laboratory for Temporal Logic.
On November 2, 2023, Computer Science Alum Karthik Balakrishnan received the Distinguished Alumni Award at the LAS Alumni Honors and Awards Ceremony. The award recognizes outstanding alumni from the Department.
