Md Muzakker Hossain, a Computer Science PhD student, served as a student volunteer at The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC) from November 16-21, 2025.
SC is one of the most prestigious conferences for high-performance computing and the supercomputing community, and only a select group of students are chosen to support the event while engaging with cutting-edge research, technical sessions, and networking with professionals from around the world.
“I applied through the SC25 Student Volunteer Program on their website,” Hossain explained when asked about the application process. “The application process was straightforward but comprehensive. I had to demonstrate my background in high-performance computing and explain how volunteering would connect with my research in Machine Learning Compiler Optimization. One of the requirements was getting a recommendation letter, and I was fortunate that my advisor, Dr. Ali Jannesari, was supportive and took the time to write one for me.”
Student volunteer programs such as this one are excellent opportunities for students to attend international conferences throughout their academic careers. Major conferences' student volunteer programs often cover expenses such as accommodations, airfare, and reduced conference registration fees.
“Beyond the volunteer duties, I attended workshops and sessions that directly relate to my research," said Hossain. “The networking opportunities were invaluable. I connected with researchers from other universities, national labs, and industry who are working on similar research.”
As for advice he may have for students interested in pursuing opportunities at other conferences, he had two pieces of advice: to start your application early and articulate how your research connects to what the conference is focused on.
“What they're really looking for is genuine enthusiasm for both contributing to the conference and growing your own understanding of the field,” advised Hossain. “Keep an eye out for application deadlines at major conferences. These programs offer opportunities that wouldn't be possible otherwise.”
