Career planning and preparation

Whether you are preparing to apply for internships or full-time careers, we have plenty of resources that can help you.

All LAS students take a course, called Professional Career Preparation (LAS 2030), that provides them with an overview of practical job-search skills.

LAS Career Services assists you with resumes, cover letters, and references; offers tools to provide feedback on formatting and content; and leads mock interviews to prepare you for upcoming interviews.

Iowa State University hosts career fairs at the beginning of each semester where students can meet with prospective employers. Additionally, the Department of Computer Science holds an industry lecture series throughout the academic year where students can hear presentations from potential employers and ask them questions.

Internship opportunities

Both undergraduate and graduate students may participate in summer internships throughout the United States. Internships offer you real-world experience in areas of computer science that you may or may not be exposed to in the classroom. They also provide valuable hands-on experience and teach skills such as time management, teamwork, and communication. Internships may lead to full-time positions at the same companies in the future.

Our students have interned at Google, Microsoft, Meta, John Deere, Morgan Stanley, and many other companies.

What can you do with an undergraduate computer science degree?

The best thing about a computer science degree is the variety of industries that use computer science. An undergraduate degree from our program opens doors to numerous fields, allowing you to apply your skills however you may choose. Over 90% of our graduates are either attending graduate school or working full-time within six months of graduation.

Our graduates pursue careers in education, health care, insurance, and agriculture. They develop online learning platforms, advance telemedicine technologies, protect user privacy, design customer service automation, and create data analysis tools.

What can you do with a graduate computer science degree?

Our master’s degree programs offer theoretical and experimental methods for solving fundamental and practical programs in computer science and artificial intelligence. As a result, our graduates are well-equipped to tackle some of the toughest problems companies present to them. Graduates of our program have gone on to work for Principal Financial Group, Microsoft, Walt Disney, Google, John Deere, LinkedIn, and other Fortune 500 companies.

Our Ph.D. candidates conduct research in high-demand areas, such as data science, artificial intelligence, robotics, and software engineering. Our graduates are well prepared for careers in research or academia, with many hired by Fortune 500 companies and top-tier universities.
