Pursuit of Ph.D. After Completion of M.S. in the Same Department (COMS)

Application Process

Students interested in purusing their Ph.D. after completing an M.S. can apply during their last semester in the master's program. The application will be submitted via email to csadmissions@iastate.edu with subject line: 'Pursuit of Ph.D. After Completion of M.S. in the Same Department' 

  1. Resume/CV
  2. Program of Study for MS (Nicole can assist)
  3. Unofficial Transcript (Nicole can assist)
  4. Brief paragraph explaining why you want to pursue a Ph.D.

The student should request the following: 

  • his/her major professor to submit a letter of support
  • a graduate faculty member, other than his/her major professor, to submit a letter of support for the application.

Both need to be submitted to csadmissions@iastate.edu with subject line: 'Recommendation letter for '

The recommendation letter from the major professor should describe the student's research progress, potential and capabilities. The letter should also state whether or not the major professor is willing to supervise the student's doctoral work if the student's application in PhD program is approved. 

Three graduate faculty members, including graduate admissions committee chair and the DOGE will provide recommendation to the graduate committee chair. The evaluators Faculty advisors do not evaluate his/her student's application. If faculty advisor is either the chair of the admissions committee or the DOGE, then members from the admissions committee replace them as evaluators. There are three types of recommendations 

  1. Admission to PhD program denied
  2. Admission to PhD program with condition
  3. Admission to PhD program without condition

Application Deadlines and Evaluation Timeline

For the Ph.D. status to begin in a Fall semester, a completed application must be submitted no later than March 1. Decisions will go out around than April 1

For the Ph.D. status to begin in a Spring semester, a completed application must be submitted no later than October 1.Decisions will go out around November 1

If Approved for Ph.D. Program

If the student is notified that his/her application is accepted, Nicole Lewis will work with them to complete the Pursuit of MS and PhD in Same Department form.

International students on a visa should contact ISSO about any additional visa paperwork that may need to be filed if you require more time to complete your degree.


Pursuit of M.S. On the Way to Ph.D. in the Same Department (COMS)

Application Process

Students interested in purusing their M.S. on the way to Ph.D. can apply within their first two years. The application will be submitted via email to csadmissions@iastate.edu with subject line: 'Pursuit of M.S. On the Way to Ph.D. in the Same Department'

  1. Resume/CV
  2. Program of Study for Ph.D. (Nicole can assist)
  3. Unofficial Transcript (Nicole can assist)
  4. Brief paragraph explaining why you want to pursue a Ph.D.

The student should request the following: 

  • his/her major professor to submit a letter of support

Application Deadlines and Evaluation Timeline

Applications should be submitted one year prior to planned MS Thesis defense date. This is because of a requirement to have your POS(C) approved the semester prior to your graduation semester.

If Approved

If the student is notified that his/her MS on the way to PhD has been approved, Nicole will work with the student to complete the Pursuit of MS and PhD in Same Department form.

International students on a visa - if you are not adding any time to your degree program you do not need to talk with ISSO.
