Dr. Chang has taught in the higher education since 1995. One of the large online courses she designed and taught since 2003 which serves several hundred students every semester with 94% high student satisfaction rate. The course earned approximately $2.3 million in student tuition and more than 4,000 credit hours each semester at its peak for the department and college. She used this course as one of her research bases. Her research paper has been published in the prestigious "Journal of Research on Technology in Education", which has an acceptance rate of just 6%. Dr. Chang has taught over 24,000 students, earned more than 94,000 credit hours, and generated substantial revenue for the department, college and university.
Dr. Chang also leads the graduate TA training and designed the 'Canvas Course: Computer Science Graduate TA Training' course, which included in-person training sessions in August 2022, 2023, and 2024. These training sessions were immensely beneficial for all faculty members and crucial to the department's success. During this time, Dr. Chang trained approximately 200 graduate TAs. Notably, twelve of these trained TAs received the prestigious Teaching Excellence Award from Iowa State University's Graduate College. This achievement underscores Dr. Chang’s substantial and meaningful contributions to both undergraduate and graduate education and highlights her leadership role within the department.
Dr. Chang received three prestigious international awards, including two Blackboard Greenhouse Exemplary Course Program Awards (2007, 2008), the Global Quality Matters Certificate Award (2024), two ISU LAS awards (College of Liberal Arts and Science Excellence in Introductory Undergraduate Teaching Award, 2008; The Master Teacher Award, 2009), one Departmental Excellence Award in Teaching (2024), and one ISU CELT High Quality Award (2024). These awards underscore Dr. Chang’s exceptional expertise in teaching and course design, while demonstrating her leadership and substantial contributions to education at the department, college, and university.
