Alumnus Dr. Srinivas Aluru was awarded the prestigious 2025 Charles Babbage Award for his work in parallel computational biology. The award, established in memory of Charles Babbage, recognizes significant contributions to parallel computing, with the winner having made outstanding, innovative contributions to parallel computing.
Dr. Aluru is currently a Regents' Professor and Senior Associate Dean in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech University. He received his MS and PhD from the Department of Computer Science at Iowa State University in 1991 and 1994. His PhD was jointly supervised by Dr. Gurpur Prabhu and Dr. John Gustafson.
“A sidebar about my supervision,” Dr. Prabhu said, “It is not often that one comes across students who are smarter than their professors. Srinivas was such a student – and my supervisory role can be reduced to the following one-liner: I just stayed out of his way as best I could!"
After working on high-performance computing during the first few years of his career, his research interests expanded into computational biology. He has performed several breakthrough works in parallel computational biology, including sequencing the maize genome and microbial genetics. He has received several awards in his career and has played leadership roles on program committees and organizing committees at numerous conferences. Not only is he a great researcher, but he is also an excellent teacher in the classroom. The Charles Babbage Award is a fitting and well-deserved pinnacle to his academic accomplishments.
We are proud to count Dr. Aluru as our alumni. To learn more about Dr. Aluru and his research, please read his interview with the IEEE Computer Society, which can be found here.
