Computer Science Lists
The Department of Computer Science maintains several mailing lists, which are created on the Iowa state University Mailman servers and managed by the System Support Group (SSG).
Subscribing to Lists
Most undergraduate lists are maintained by data retrieved from Beardshear Hall. Users that are not on one of these lists, but wish to be, can subscribe to the list by sending an email to the SSG. Please indicate in the email the name of the list to be subscribed.
Special Lists
The SSG maintains two separate job lists for any Computer Science Undergraduate or Graduate student that would like to receive job updates.
To subscribe to these lists, you will need to send an email to listname-join@iastate.edu. Listname will be either:
- cs_jobs_ugrads or
- cs_jobs_grads
Please be mindful that there is no posting to these lists. They are only for disseminating information from the department staff and advisors.
Unsubscribing From Lists
Users should always be able to unsubscribe from any list they do not wish to be part of. To unsubscribe from a list, simply go to the website https://mailman.iastate.edu/mailman/listinfo/listname.
Users will be asked to authenticate with the Iowa State system before unsubscribing from the list.
Users may also unsubscribe by sending an email to SSG.
If a user needs to be re-subscribed to an SSG maintained list, please email the SSG with the appropriate information.

Mailing List Creation
This guild will help you to create mailing lists and class lists on the Iowa State University ASW website. There are three guides:
- Class Mailing List
- Regular Mailing Lists
- Mailman Lists
Setting Up a New Class Mailing List on ASW
Note that you will need to know your course and section number(s) to use this generated class list.
- Log on to ASW. You will need to use your ISU Net ID and password.
- Click the "Manage Lists" link on the main menu. This will take you to an new page.
- Click the "Manage Class List" link. This will take you to the Class Mailing list page.
- Choose the class for which you would like to create the list and click the Create Selected Classlist(s) button. You may choose more than one with the key.
All premade class lists are in the format: year.department.course.section@iastate.edu.
Key | Description |
---|---|
year | f (fall) or s (spring) and the year (e.g. s2014 for Spring 2014) |
department | com_s |
course | The 3 digit course number |
section | The 2 digit section number |
So, the final email address will be similar to s2014.coms_s.100.01@iastate.edu.
- The list will be created by the information type on the website. You will see the name of this list shown on the webpage.
- After this, you can download or display the data by clicking the appropriate buttons
Create A Regular Mailing List
- Log on to ASW. You will need to use your Iowa State Net ID and password.
- Click the "Manage Lists" link on the main menu.
- Click on "Create a List".
- Fill in all of the information for the list.
- Check the "Mail" property and click the "Update Now" button.
- Go back to the "List" menu.
- Click on "Show Lists You Own".
- Select the list that you just created. Click on "View / Update List members".
- Fill the list with the entire email address. For example, you can put the class list generated for the ASW Mailing list, TA email addresses and yourself.
Setting Up A New Mailman List
- Log on to ASW. You will need to use your Iowa State Net ID and password.
- Click the "Manage Mailman List" link on the main menu.
- Click "Create a Mailman List".
- Fill out the name of the list and click "Create Mailman List".
- click on "Mailman Web Interface" after creating the list.
- Please refer to the Mailman administration site for more information on how to manage a new mailman list.
- The mailman list is a manageable list. You have far more administrative options using a mailman list rather than the other types of mailing lists. For example, you can restrict who can send mail to the list members. Normal lists do not have this granularity of control.
Important Information
- If you do not set the "Mail" property for the normal lists, you cannot send any email to that list. Any email that you send will be bounced back to you.
- It will take time for mailing lists to be created. The lists are usually created overnight, so they should be usable the next day.
