How to add a Printer for OS X Users

This page documents how to add a network printer to an OS X machine. If you have a Microsoft Windows device, you'll want to check out this page.

Prior to setting up your printer you may want to install the vendor supplied drivers to make sure all features are available.
An example would be that using generic drivers may not allow you to print a color 11x17 (tableture) page.

Pre-req - Install instructions and driver downloads:

Go to System Preferences, and select “Printers & Scanners”

Under the list of printers, press the “+” button

If the “Advanced” tab does not show up , right click on the empty space on the toolbar and select “Customize Toolbar…”

Drag the “Advanced” icon onto the toolbar

Click on the “Advanced” tab

  • Under Type: Select “Windows printer via spoolss”
  • Under URL, type: 
    • If you are printing in Pearson Hall, enter: “smb://papercut3.its.iastate.edu/PRINTER_NAME"
    • If you are printing in Atanasoff Hall, enter: “smb://papercut3.its.iastate.edu/PRINTER_NAME"
  • Under Use: Select “Generic PostScript Printer”. Alternatively, download the specific driver for the printer, and select that
  • Hit add, and enter your netID and password when prompted

  • Undergraduate and graduate students: Printer cost is posted next to the printer
