Graduate Program - ISU Transfer Students

Transferring to MS/PhD program in Computer Science from another MS/PhD program at ISU

Students planning to transfer to the graduate program in Computer Science are required to submit the following:

  1. Current curriculum vitae (containing information about GRE, TOEFL and OECT scores, prior graduate and undergraduate degrees, GPA and names of at least three professional references at Iowa State University)
  2. Transcript (unofficial transcript is allowed, but will need verification)
  3. A statement of purpose (at most 500 words) explaining why the student wants to transfer to computer science along with information about his/her computing background (if any). These documents must be submitted via email to, with subject line: 'Request for transfer'.
  4. 3 Letters of Recommendation sent from recommenders to
  • For the transfer to commence in Fall semester, the documents must be submitted no later than August 15th
  • For the transfer to commence in Spring semester, the documents must be submitted no later than December 5th

Typically, 'Transfer without condition' is granted only when the applicant has (undergraduate level) background in items 1, 2 and 3, and two of the items 4, 5 and 6 from the following computing areas:

  1. Algorithms
  2. Theory of Computation
  3. Programming experience
  4. Software Engineering
  5. AI
  6. Systems and Networking

Deficiency in some (two or three) of the above areas may result in 'Transfer with condition', where the condition requires the applicant to attain a minimum grade of B- in undergraduate level courses at ISU addressing the deficiencies. No background in most (four or more) of the above areas may result in 'Transfer denied'. If the student is notified that his/her transfer has been approved (with or without condition), then the student is responsible for filing the appropriate transfer form available from the graduate college website within the college-specified deadline:
