George O. Strawn Honored with Distinguished Service Award

Ames, Iowa—Iowa State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences honored George O. Strawn with a Distinguished Service Award at an honors and awards ceremony on October 26, 2017 in Ames, Iowa. The award recognizes alumni, faculty and friends of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who demonstrate outstanding service or academic contributions that further the educational mission of the college.

Strawn is currently the director of the Board on Research Data and Information at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Prior to joining the Academies, Strawn was the director of the National Coordination Office (NCO) for the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program and co-chair of the NITRD interagency committee. Strawn held these positions while on leave from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Whitehouse.

Prior to his NITRD responsibilities, Strawn was the NSF Chief Information Officer after serving in a number of capacities. He led NSF’s efforts in the Presidential Next Generation Internet Initiative as part of the NSF Directorate for Computer and Information Infrastructure and Research. He also served as a NSFnet Program Officer where he was part of the team that transitioned the experimental ARPAnet into the global Internet.

Before coming to NSF, Strawn was a computer science faculty member at Iowa State and a staff member in ISU’s Computation Center. He served terms as director of the Computation Center and as chair of the Department of Computer Science. He has chaired the Department of Computer Science External Advisory Council for more than 10 years.

Strawn received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Iowa State University in 1969 and his B.A. Magna Cum Laude in Mathematics and Physics from Cornell College in 1962. He is a fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Science and a member of the Cosmos Club.
