Title: The Design of a Low-Power Wide-Area Network over White Spaces
Abstract: As a key technology driving the Internet-of-Things, Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWANs) are evolving to overcome the range limits and scalability challenges in traditional wireless sensor networks. In this talk, I shall present the design of a new LPWAN architecture called SNOW (Sensor Network Over White Spaces) by exploiting the TV white spaces. SNOW is the first highly scalable LPWAN over the TV spectrum that enables asynchronous, low-energy, bi-directional, and massively concurrent communication between numerous sensors and a base station. This is achieved through a Distributed implementation of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing, called D-OFDM, that allows the base station using a single antenna-radio to receive concurrent transmissions made by the sensor nodes asynchronously. SNOW adopts a lightweight media access control protocol that efficiently implements per-transmission acknowledgments of the asynchronous transmissions by exploiting the adopted D-OFDM design. I shall also present an implementation of SNOW on hardware and some experimental results through deployments in three radio environments — Detroit Metropolitan area, a rural area, and an indoor environment.
