If you asked members of our faculty in the Department of Computer Science at Iowa State University what their favorite part of working with young students is, one of the things you would hear is their enthusiasm and love of computer science.
On Saturday, April 1st, in the Communications Building, we will give an overview about what is Computer Science and one active research lab with high school students.
Location: Communications 1230
09:45-10:05 Intro to Computer Science, diverse areas of computer science from theory to applications (Pak)
10.05-10.25 0 and 1: The beginning of everything (Ying)
Location: Communications 1110
10:30-11:00 Autonomous Systems Lab
* Brief intro (Nok)
Computer Science Professor Myra Cohen and Postdoctoral Research Associate Breno Dantas Cruz spent a day this Fall at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge introducing K-12 students to Computing using Dash and Dot robots. On Saturday, October 8th, over 200 students and families attended the STEAMfest, where STEAM stands for Science Technology Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
The Department of Computer Science hosted a two-week-long Summer Workshop from August 2nd to August 13th. The workshop was a hands-on learning experience for high school students in the Science Bound program who were interested in Computer Science. The event improved outreach efforts to the K-12 community, with special emphasis on broadening participation in computer science among underrepresented students.

On April 14, 2018, the Department of Computer Science hosted nearly 30 students in K-12 for the 9th annual Computational Thinking Competition.
The competition, co-sponsored by Rockwell Collins, helps students engage in computational thinking, a critical thinking skill that involves breaking down a problem into manageable pieces and working toward a solution in an organized manner which a computer could carry out.
Prizes include, but are not limited to laptops, tablets, and Raspberry PIs.
