Karthik Balakrishnan Joins External Advisory Council
The Department is pleased to announce that Karthik Balakrishnan is our newest appointee to the External Advisory Council. Balakrishnan earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Iowa State University, specializing in AI. He has 25 years of experience developing and leading data/analytics and product functions at Verisk, Allstate Insurance, and Fireman’s Fund/Allianz Insurance Company.
Dr. Hridesh Rajan Reappointed as Department Chair
Iowa State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences announced the re-appointment of Hridesh Rajan, professor of computer science and Kingland Professor of Data Analytics, for a second five-year term as chair of the Department of Computer Science.

Robotics Club Awarded NHRL Grant
The Robotics Club has been awarded a $10,000 grant from Greater Horizons. The award is one of the NHRL 2023 College and University Robotics Grants to provide up to 100 college robotics teams with the necessary resources to grow their creativity and utilize their full potential.
“This grant will definitely play an important role in boosting the club’s ongoing projects and providing new learning and exploration opportunities with robots,” says one of the club advisors, Dr. Yan-Bin Jia.
