$1.5 million Kingland gift will have far-reaching impact at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa – Kingland, based in Clear Lake, Iowa, and David and Deb Kingland, recently gifted $1.5 million to benefit students and faculty in three colleges at Iowa State University.

Kingland is a leading provider of enterprise-class data and compliance software for audit, finance, insurance and retail companies with offices in Clear Lake and Ames, Iowa. David Kingland, CEO and chairman of Kingland, and his wife, Deb, are longtime supporters of Iowa State University. David Kingland has served on the College of Business Dean’s Advisory Council since 2009.

“Deb and I are both proud Iowa State alumni and to this day continue to be positively impacted by this great university,” said David Kingland. “Iowa State has been a tremendous collaborator with Kingland, and this is our way to say thank you and to continue to partner in the next generation of software, data and innovation.”

Kingland and David and Deb Kingland’s most recent gift supports the university’s $1.1 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign, Forever True, For Iowa State.

“We have been able to achieve company success due in part to our relationship with Iowa State. Over the past decade we have employed well over 1,500 Iowa State student interns and grown our full-time employee base with Iowa State University talent,” said Todd Rognes, president, Kingland. “We look forward to growing this relationship with the faculty and students who have an interest in the areas we support.”

The gift is designated to support one of Iowa State’s top campaign priorities, data analytics, across the College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering by providing student scholarships, named faculty positions and support for student organizations.

Scholarship funds have been created for use by each college. In the College of Business, a scholarship fund has been established to support students interested in a career in data analytics, the Kingland Business Analytics Scholarship. The Kingland Data Analytics Scholarship Fund in Liberal Arts and Sciences has been established in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Kingland Data Analytics Scholarship Fund in Engineering has been established in the College of Engineering. The scholarships will be awarded beginning with the fall 2017 academic year.

Additionally, the gift provides eight named faculty positions to support professors whose teaching and research advances the university’s focus in data analytics, entrepreneurship and other high-growth areas.

In the College of Business, named faculty positions are held by Sree Nilakanta, Kingland Graduate Director of Business Analytics; Kevin P. Scheibe, Kingland Business Analytics Faculty Fellow; Zhu Zhang, Kingland Business Analytics Faculty Fellow; Howard Van Auken, Kingland Professor of Entrepreneurship; and James R. Brown, holder of the Kingland MBA Professorship. In the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, faculty positions are held by Hridesh Rajan, Kingland Professor of Data Analytics and Stephen Vardeman, Kingland Data Analytics Faculty Fellow; and Srikanta Tirthapura has been named the Kingland Professor of Data Analytics in the College of Engineering. A ceremony to formally recognize faculty members awarded the named faculty positions will be held in the spring.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of Kingland and David and Deb Kingland in supporting Iowa State,” said Iowa State University President Steven Leath. “These scholarships and named faculty positions will benefit Iowa State students studying data analytics, entrepreneurship and business administration. Knowledge in this area is in demand both here in Iowa and around the world.”
