First of all, I'd like to thank you for visiting my
homepage. My name is Seo-Young, and as you might guess, I am a Korean. My
name has a meaning as do most Korean names. Whenever my foreign friends ask
me the meaning of my name, I get in stuck because I
find that I can not express the meaning of my name exactly in English. It is
even difficult to explain in Korean. My father gave me my name, but I never
asked him what it meant. I've been telling people that it means "Pure
Light". I'm not sure if that is correct, but it sounds good to me.

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the
department of Computer Science at Iowa
State University. It has been almost five years since I left my home
country. Hmm.. actually I am not missing my home town. Why? Because Ames is
almost same as my home town. But I still miss my parents and my younger
brother. Thanks to the Internet and overseas telephone services, however, I
still get to communicate with them. Ames was the first place I visited the
United States. My first impression of this small city was that there was
nothing to do except studying and playing soccer.

I love playing soccer, and it is giving me lots of energy to help survive
in the United States. I am absolutely sure that it will continue to inspire
me until the day I leave this beautiful place. I was a soccer player when I
was an elementary school student. I don't know why they selected me, because
I was not a strong player at that time, but in any event, the opportunity
deeply affected my life. As a result of that opportunity, I am now captain
of the the Korean Soccer Club in
Ames. Actually I once had the experience of being the captain of a team
before, when I was a sophomore in Korea. My friends and I organized a soccer
club at Chungbuk National University.
The name of the team is "Crab". You might think this is not a
suitable name for a soccer club because it is not tough enough, but all
Koreans recognize nuances in the meaning of the name that are lost in the
translation. It has been almost 9 years since we established the club.
Recently, my juniors elected the 7th president of the great soccer club-"Crab."
