Com S 591 Graduate Orientation Seminar
Course Overview
This is a 1-credit seminar designed to introduce beginning graduate students
to graduate study, research, and careers in Computer Science.
The course covers topics such as:
introduction to ISU computing facilities, M.S. and Ph.D. degree requirements,
career choices, research methods, evaluation criteria, ethics, technical
presentations, technical writing, ethics in writing, and overview of
faculty research.
Students are expected to explore on line resources on
various topics prior to the seminar each week and actively participate
in the discussions.

The seminar meets at 1:00pm every thursday (except the first week of classes)
in room 201, Pearson Hall unless otherwise announced.

- Week 1: Introduction to Computing Laboratory Facilities and Tools (on line documentation, Internet Search, World-Wide Web etc.): Systems Support Group. (Note: this will be covered in the Departmental Orientation for New Graduate Students at 4:00pm
on thursday, August 29).

Week 2: Overview of the Graduate Program and M.S. and Ph.D. Degree Requirements, Arthur Oldehoeft.

Week 3: Surviving Graduate School and Careers in Computer Science, Panel Discussion: Senior M.S. and Ph.D. students (Marybeth Gurski, Rajesh Parekh, Krishna Dhara, et al.)

Week 4: Professional and Scientific Ethics. Group Discussion.
