      Announcement and Call for Papers
      Second International ICSC Symposium on FUZZY LOGIC AND APPLICATIONS
      ISFL'97

      To be held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH),

      February 12 - 14, 1997

I.    SPONSORS
      Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland and
      ICSC, International Computer Science Conventions, Canada/Switzerland

II.   PURPOSE OF THE CONFERENCE
      This conference is the successor of the highly successful meeting
      held in Zurich in 1995 (ISFL'95) and is intended to provide a
      forum for the discussion of new developments in fuzzy logic and
      its applications. An invitation to participate is extended both
      to those who took part in ISFL'95 and to others working in this
      field.

      Applications of fuzzy logic have played a significant role
      in industry, notably in the field of process and plant control,
      especially in applications where accurate modelling is difficult.
      The organisers hope that contributions will come not only from
      this field, but also from newer applications areas, perhaps in
      business, financial planning management, damage assessment,
      security, and so on.

      Conventions (ICSC), Canada/Switzerland.

VI.   PUBLICATION OF PAPERS
      All accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings,
      published by ICSC Academic Press. In addition, some selected
      papers may also be considered for journal publication.

VII.  SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
      Prospective authors are requested to send two copies of their
      abstracts of 500 words for review by the International Scientific
      Committee. All abstracts must be written in English, starting
      with a succinct statement of the problem, the results achieved,
      their significance and a comparison with previous work. If
      authors believe that more details are necessary to substantiate
      the main claims of the paper, they may include a clearly marked
      appendix that will be read at the discretion of the International
      Scientific Committee.

      The abstract should also include:
      - Title of proposed paper
      - Authors names, affiliations, addresses
      - Name of author to contact for correspondence
      - E-mail address and fax number of contact author
      - Name of topic which best describes the paper (max. 5 keywords)

      Contributions are welcome from those working in industry and having
      experience in the topics of this conference as well as from
      academics.

      The conference language is English.

      Abstracts may be submitted either by electronic mail (ASCII text),
      fax or mail (2 copies) to either one of the following addresses:

      Winter is an attractive season in Switzerland and many famous
      alpine resorts are in easy reach by rail, bus or car for a one
      or two day excursion. The city of Zurich itself is the proud home

>>> Call for Papers <<<

>>> Management Applications of Fuzzy Set Theory <<<

Editors: J. Biethahn, A. Hvnerloh, V. Nissen

The aim of this book is to document current applications and application-
oriented research on fuzzy-technology in the management domain, such as:

* production planning
* inventory management
* personnel scheduling
* data mining
* classification
* forecasting
* decision support

Obviously, hybrid approaches including combinations of fuzzy systems with
evolutionary algorithms, neural nets etc. are also of interest in this context.
The book follows our successful 2nd Symposium on Soft Computing, which took
place on 29th Feb. at the University of Goettingen. Physica-Verlag
(subdivision of Springer-Verlag) has agreed to publish the book,
though the contract is not signed yet. The book will consist of mixed
German and English contributions and appear under a German title.

We are seeking high-quality application-oriented papers.

The formated paper should have between 10 and 20 pages (12 pt),
and include an abstract, address of authors, and keywords.
Detailed formating requirements will be issued later. It
would make things easier for us if you worked with the
textsystem WinWord.

IMPORTANT DATES:
 Full papers due : May 15 th (arrival at Goettingen;
      no e-mail submissions, please)
 Notification of acceptance: Aug. 1st
 Revised, camera-ready papers due: Oct. 1st

Please send three copies of your manuscript to the following address:

                IDSIA POSTDOC POSITION

IDSIA, the Swiss machine learning research institute,
offers a 2-year postdoc position with possibility for
renewal. Goal of the corresponding research project is to
analyze, compare, extend, and apply `neural' algorithms for
unsupervised learning and redundancy reduction. A main focus
will be on `predictability minimization' (see refs below).
Application areas include adaptive image pre-processing,
classification, data compression. The ideal candidate combines
strong mathematical skills (relevant areas include statistics
and information theory), strong programming skills, and
experience in unsupervised learning. Applicants should be
willing to build on our previous work. Begin: as soon as
possible.

Switzerland tends to be nice to scientists. It boasts the
highest supercomputing capacity per capita, the most Nobel
prizes per capita (with Sweden), the highest gross national
product per capita (with Luxembourg), and the best chocolate.
IDSIA is located in beautiful Lugano, capital of scenic Ticino
(the southern part of Switzerland). Pictures in my home page.
Milano, Italy's center of fashion and finance, is one hour
away. CSCS, the Ticino supercomputing center, is nearby.
Salary is competitive. To obtain an overview of IDSIA's
activities, see our home page.

If interested, please send CV, list of publications, and
cover letter with brief statement of research interests plus
email addresses of three references to

                    juergen@idsia.ch

Send them as separate, uncompressed ASCII or postscript files.
ASCII greatly preferred. Please call subject headers of ASCII
files: name.cv, name.pub, name.cover, respectively, where `name'
stands for your name. Please call subject headers of postscript
files: name.cv.ps, name.pub.ps, name.cover.ps, respectively.
Please also send HARDCOPIES of 3 representative papers by
PHYSICAL mail (no problem if they arrive after the deadline).

  DEADLINE: APRIL 10, 1996. Earlier applications preferred.

			ABSTRACT

There has been an increased interest in combining fuzzy systems with
neural networks because fuzzy neural systems merge the advantages of
both paradigms. On the one hand, parameters in fuzzy systems have clear
physical meanings and rule-based and linguistic information can be
incorporated into adaptive fuzzy systems in a systematic way. On the
other hand, there exist powerful algorithms for training various neural
network models. However, most of the proposed combined architectures
are only able to process static input-output relationships, i.e. they
are not able to process temporal input sequences of arbitrary length.
Fuzzy finite-state automata (FFAs) can model dynamical processes
whose current state depends on the current input and previous states.
Unlike in the case of deterministic finite-state automata (DFAs),
FFAs are not in one particular state, rather each state is occupied to
some degree defined by a membership function. Based on previous work on
encoding DFAs in discrete-time, second-order recurrent neural networks,
we propose an algorithm that constructs an augmented recurrent neural
network that encodes a FFA and recognizes a given fuzzy regular language
with arbitrary accuracy. We then empirically verify the encoding methodology
by measuring string recognition performance of recurrent neural networks
which encode large randomly generated FFAs. In particular, we examine how
the networks' performance varies as a function of synaptic weight strength.

Keywords: Fuzzy logic, automata, fuzzy automata, recurrent neural networks,
encoding, rules.
