              EVOLVING NON-TRIVIAL BEHAVIORS ON REAL ROBOTS:

                                Abstract

Recently, a new approach that involves a form of simulated evolution has been
proposed for the building of autonomous robots. However, it is still not clear
if this approach may be adequate to face real life problems. In this paper we
show how control systems that perform a non-trivial sequence of behaviors can
be obtained with this methodology by carefully designing the conditions in
which the evolutionary process operates. In the experiment described in the
paper, a mobile robot is trained to locate, recognize, and grasp a target
object. The controller of the robot has been evolved in simulation and then
downloaded and tested on the real robot.

     EVOLVING MOBILE ROBOTS IN SIMULATED AND REAL ENVIRONMENTS

                                Abstract

The problem of the validity of simulation is particularly relevant for
methodologies that use machine learning techniques to develop control
systems for autonomous robots, like, for instance, the Artificial Life
approach named Evolutionary Robotics.
In fact, despite that it has been demonstrated that training or
evolving robots in the real environment is possible, the number of
trials needed to test the system discourage the use of physical robots
during the training period.
By evolving neural controllers for a Khepera robot in computer
simulations and then transferring the obtained agents in the real
environment we will show that:
(a) an accurate model of a particular robot-environment dynamics
can be built by sampling the real world through the sensors and the
actuators of the robot;
(b) the performance gap between the obtained behaviors in simulated and
real environment may be significantly reduced by introducing a
"conservative" form of noise;
(c) if a decrease in performance is observed when the system is
transferred to the real environment, successful and robust results can
be obtained by continuing the evolutionary process in the real
environment for few generations.

                              ~~~~~~~~~
T1 - Artificial Life and Autonomous Robots (3.10.95 AM)
     Luc Steels
Artificial Life studies the phenomenon of life the same way AI studies
intelligence:  by  building  artificial  systems  that  show  the same
capabilities  as living systems. For a growing group of researchers in
AI,  there  must  be  strong  connections between the two disciplines,
because  they  believe  that  the  principles  of living systems are a
prerequisite  for  those  of  intelligent  systems.  This  tutorial is
intended  for  a  general  AI  audience  with  no  prior background in
biology,  Alife,  or  robotics.  It  gives  an overview of research in
Alife,  the  behavior-oriented  approach  to  AI,  and  the biological
significance of this research.
T2 - Virtual Reality - The AI perspective (3.10.95 PM)
The  tutorial  will  examine  the  rapidly  evolving  field of Virtual
Reality (VR) and explore the key role that AI could play in its future
development.  Participants  will gain an understanding of the state of
the  art  in VR hardware and systems, and an appreciation of the major
areas  in  which it is being applied. With this background, the aim is
to  provoke  interest  and  activity  in  the  application of AI to VR
through  the development of: (1) automatons to populate virtual worlds
alongside human participants; and (2) intelligent systems for creating
virtual worlds from sensory images of the real world, in order to give
the illusion of presence at a remote location.
T3 - Introduction  to  Artificial Intelligence
     (in Portuguese - 3.10.95 AM)
     Ernesto Costa
Artificial  Intelligence  is  the  enterprise  of building intelligent
agents.  An  intelligent  agent  is  an entity that perceives, reasons
about  and  acts  upon  the  environment.  We  will  start  by briefly
discussing  the different paradigms (symbolic, connectionist, genetic,
emergent) that had been proposed as approaches to the task of building
such  agents. We will then focus on the symbolic approach, showing how
intelligence  is  the  result  of  the interplay between knowledge and
reasoning,  and  discussing the declarative, procedural and structured
ways  of  dealing with knowledge representation and reasoning. We will
conclude  with  simple  examples  from areas of learning, planning and
natural language understanding.
T4 - Design of Expert Systems
     (in Portuguese - 3.10.95 PM)
     Ernesto Morgado
The  objective  of  this  tutorial is to introduce the key ideas about
expert  systems.  What  are the problems that require them? What makes
expert  systems  different  from  other  programs?  What  are the main
techniques  used  by  them?  What  are  the  different types of expert
systems  available  today?  How  can  they  be  integrated  with other
problems  in  the  real world? How can they be developed successfully?
These  and  many  other  aspects  must  be  understood for someone who
desires to develop expert systems in the real world.
                               The Venue
                               ~~~~~~~~~
Madeira is an island in the northern half of the Atlantic Ocean about
1,000 km from Lisbon. It is 57 km long and 22 km wide. The landscape
is vernal and luxuriant: the rich flora, with its diversity of trees
and flowers, exist in a truly sub-tropical environment. The population
of the entire island is approximately 280,000, and that of the
capital, Funchal, is approximately 140,000.

                           Climate and Dress
                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At  the  beginning  of October, the temperature ranges from 22C to 25C
(72F  to  77F)  during  the day, and 20C to 22C (68F to 72F) at night.
Lightweight clothing is therefore recommended. However, if you plan to
visit  the  mountain  areas  of the island, it is recommended that you
bring  a jacket. The island does receive rain from time to time during
this  part  of  the  year,  so  it  is advisable to bring an umbrella.
                    Transport  and  Accommodations
                    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The trip from the airport to the hotels in Funchal is by bus. The
round trip from the airport to the Congress Hotel is included in the
conference fee only for those who make their airline reservations
through JFM Tours - the EPIA 95 official travel agency. If you take a
cab from the airport, be prepared to pay from 3000 PTE (daytime
working days, without luggage) to around 5000 PTE for the trip from
the airport terminal to the Casino Park Hotel. (Note that these are
merely rough estimates.) All tickets issued by JFM Tours will not be
restricted as to the minimum number of days of stay, and tickets can
therefore be changed on request.

Dear Colleagues,

       All postings on the GANN Mailing List are automatically archived
    by the Majordomo server.

       If you wish to look at an old posting, you can request the
    Majordomo server to extract an archive for you. Details follow.

       Send a mail to -- majordomo@cs.iastate.edu with body (not subject)

	    index gann-list

       This will return a list of current archives. For e.g.:

>>>> index gann-list
total 622
-rw-r-----   1 mdomo    sys        73201 May 22 22:14 gann-list.9505

-rw-rw----   1 mdomo    ssg         4885 Jul  3 17:35 gann-list.9507

       The server typically compiles one archive for each month.

       Now you have to afford a guess as to when the posting of your
     interest actually appeared on this List (Sorry -- there doesn't
     seem to be a better way right now :( :(). If you think it appeared
     in June, then get the archive for June as follows:

       Send mail to -- majordomo@cs.iastate.edu with body (not subject)

	    get  gann-list   gann-list.9506

       And that should get you the desired archive. Of course you will
     have to look through the archive to locate the desired posting :-).

       Note: You can request multiple archives at the same time. For, e.g.,

       Send mail to -- majordomo@cs.iastate.edu with body (not subject)

	    get  gann-list   gann-list.9506
	    get  gann-list   gann-list.9507

       will get you the archives for June and July.

       ************* I M P O R T A N T *****************
       Please allow for some delays when requesting information from the
       Majordomo server. Due to local system loads and list traffic,
       the response from the majordomo server may not be instantaneous :-).

       Hope this helps...

Master's Thesis, Technical University of Berlin, Stanford University, 1995

Abstract:
This study focuses on the genetic construction of feedforward neural
networks. Feedforward neural networks constitute a good solution for many
difficult problems. They can be trained with fast and reliable learn
algorithms once their topology is known. Unfortunately the topology is problem
dependent and usually not easy to find. The genetic system presented in this
study is an approach to solve this problem automatically. It consists of two
innovative parts: the Semantic Changing Genetic Algorithm and the Unit-Cluster
Model. The Semantic Changing Genetic Algorithm is an extended genetic algorithm
that allows fast dynamic adaption of the genetic coding through population
analysis. The Unit-Cluster Model is an approach to the construction of
modular feedforward networks with a ``backbone'' structure.

Evolutionary Programming Society Award for Best Student Paper

In order to foster student contributions and encourage exceptional scholarship
in evolutionary programming and closely related fields, the Evolutionary
Programming Society awards one exceptional student paper submitted to the
Annual Conference on Evolutionary Programming. The award carries a $500 cash
prize and a plaque signifying the honor.

To be eligible for the award, all authors of the paper must be full-time
students at an accredited college, university or other educational
institution. Submissions to be considered for this award must be clearly marked
at the top of the title page with the phrase "CONSIDER FOR STUDENT AWARD." In
addition, the paper should be accompanied by a cover letter stating that (1)
the paper is to be considered for the student award (2) all authors are
currently enrolled full-time students at a university, college or other
educational institution, and (3) that the student authors are responsible for
the work presented. Only papers submitted to the conference and marked as
indicated will be considered for the award. Late submissions will not be
considered. Officers of the Evolutionary Programming Society, students under
their immediate supervision, and their immediate family members are not
eligible.

Judging will be made by officers of the Evolutionary Programming Society or by
an Awards Committee appointed by the president. Judging will be based on the
perceived technical merit of the student's research to the field of
evolutionary programming, and more broadly to the understanding of
self-organizing systems. The Evolutionary Programming Society and/or the Awards
Committee reserves the right not to give an award in any year if no eligible
student paper is deemed to be of award quality. Presentation of the Student
Paper Award will be made at the conference.

                     The University of Birmingham
                      School of Computer Science

                       Research Studentships in
                       ~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~
                EMERGENT AND EVOLUTIONARY   BEHAVIOUR,
                    INTELLIGENCE,  AND  COMPUTATION
                                (EEBIC)
Applications are invited  for  a number of Studentships  for full-time
PhD research in  the School of Computer  Science to carry out research
within the recently founded EEBIC group.
The group's research interests include: evolutionary computation (e.g.
genetic  algorithms  and   genetic programming),  emergent  behaviour,
emergent   intelligence  (e.g.   emergent  communication),    emergent
computation and artificial  life and  their practical applications  in
hard engineering problems.
The members  of the group,  at  Birmingham and  elsewhere, are  active
researchers in Artificial Intelligence, Engineering or Psychology with
a  variety  of   different backgrounds  including   Biology,  Computer
Science, Engineering, Psychology and Philosophy. In addition to EEBIC,
the research experience of the members  of the group includes computer
vision, neural nets, signal processing, intelligent autonomous agents,
The  group interacts very closely  with the Cognition and Affect group
led  by  Aaron Sloman  who is  a   member of both   groups.  (For more
information  see   URLs: ftp://ftp.cs.bham.ac.uk/pub/groups/cog_affect
and http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~axs .)
The successful  applicants will  join the  group's effort  to  explore
EEBIC in many interesting directions (from engineering to  psychology,
from new practical applications  to new theoretical frameworks).  They
will have  constant  interaction  and  collaboration  with  the  other
members of  the  group.
In addition to  the usual  requirements of possessing  a good  honours
degree (equivalent to  a first or  upper second class  degree in a  UK
university) and  being EU  residents, the  successful candidates  will
need to be particularly open minded to the cross-fertilisation in  the
group deriving from  the different backgrounds  and experience of  the
members.
Additional information  about how  to  apply and about  the  School is
available via WWW from URL: http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk
To: gann list subscribers,
Here's a copy of the release announcement for Sugal v2.0. I also have
Neural Network code working with Sugal (although its not in the release),
and hope to include it in the next release (v2.1 - due Oct95, or there
abouts).
Sugal V2.0 is now available. Sugal aims to provide the most comprehensive
package for Genetic Algorithm research and implementation in the world -
and its free.
Sugal V2.0 has the following features:
	Written in ANSI C.
	Tested on SUN SOLARIS 2 and PC BORLAND C++ 3.0. (and has been
        successfully run on OS/2 and SGI).
	Supports multiple datatypes seamlessly: bit strings, integers, real
        numbers, symbols (from arbitrarily sized alphabets). Also supports mixed
        datatypes.
	A powerful and general Genetic Algorithm (features listed below).
	Generates extensive statistics on population fitness and diversity.
	A platform-independent Graphical User Interface (running on PC
        Windows or X-Windows with MOTIF), including fitness and diversity
        graphing facilities.
	Interface can be extended and/or customised using simple registration
        routines and screen configuration files.
	Conducts multiple experiments and calculates aggregate statistics.
	Parameters can be set in configuration files, and overruled by
        command-line options, hard-coded program statements, and/or on-screen.
	Users can add their own configuration file parameters and/or add
        additional options to existing parameters.
	Virtually all major actions in the GA can be augmented/overridden
        by the user.
Major Features of the Sugal v2.0 Genetic Algorithm
	Initialisation: Uniform, Gaussian, Loaded Bit and from File.<p>
	Selection: Roulette, Integral Roulette (i.e. Expected Value Model),
        Tournament and Uniform
	Fitness Normalisation: Biased, Inversion, Linear and Mean-Linear,
        Rank Linear and Rank Geometric fitness normalisation (all either
        for minimisation or maximisation of fitness function).
	Crossover: Uniform, One-Point, Two-Point and arbitrary N-Point
        crossover, variable crossover rates.
	Mutation: Bit Inversion, Gene Reinitialisation, Step-delta,
        Uniform-delta and Gaussian-delta Mutation, including time-decay
        mutation sizes; variable mutation rates.
 	Replacement: Uniform, Rank-based, Tournament, Crowding and Parental
        replacement; replacement can be Unconditional, Simple Conditional
        (i.e. If Improved) or Simulated Annealing; variable replacement
        rate (i.e. generation gap); elitism.
Sugal has been extensively improved since v1.0.
Sugal is available primarily via the World-Wide-Web at:
http://osiris.sund.ac.uk/ahu/sugal/home.html
- this includes source files, user registration (if you wish to be
informed of Sugal upgrades, etc) and bug-report facilities.
You can also obtain Sugal by anonymous ftp from:
