We announce the availability of a new paper entitled :
"A Genetic Algorithm solution to the Unit Commitment problem"
that was presented in the IEEE PES (Power Engineering Society) Winter
Meeting, January 95, N. York, U.S.A.
The paper can be downloaded from our ftp site at :
elecserv.eng.auth.gr
by anonymous ftp, under the name :
/pub/unitcom.ps.Z
and it is a compressed file in Postscript format
The abstract of the paper follows :

This paper presents a Genetic Algorithm (GA) solution to the Unit Commitment
problem. The Unit Commitment problem in a power system involves determining
the start-up and shut down schedules of thermal units to be used to meet
forecasted demand over a future short term (24-168 hour) period. The objective
is to minimize total production costs while observing a large set of operating
constraints. GAs are general purpose optimization techniques based on principles
inspired from the biological evolution using metaphors of mechanisms such as
natural selection, genetic recombination and survival of the fittest. A simple
GA algorithm implementation using the standard crossover and mutation operators
could locate near optimal solutions but in most cases failed to converge to the
optimal solution. However, using the Varying Quality Function technique and
adding problem specific operators, satisfactory solutions to the Unit Commitment
problem were obtained. Test results for systems of up to 100 units and
comparisons with results obtained using Lagrangian Relaxation and Dynamic
Programming are also reported.
--------------------------------------
Other papers can be also found in the directory /pub in compressed PostScript
format, and some also in MS-Word for Windows format. For your convenience you
can download the file /pub/contents that contains descriptions of the papers
ftp-able and other usefull information about the server. The currently available
papers mostly concern the fields of GAs, ANNs and parallelization of GA and ANN
algorithms.
We will try to keep you informed on any new papers that will be added to our
server by this list. Any problem reports, notes or suggestions on the ftp server
can be send to :

NEW GA SOFTWARE AVAILABLE

From: cs0ahu@isis.sund.ac.uk (Andy.Hunter)
Subject: new GA software available (called SUGAL)

New GA software package available!

SUGAL (SUnderland Genetic Algorithms Library) is a new, free software
package designed to support research in Genetic Algorithms. SUGAL has
novel design features to make extension and customisation of the
algorithm possible - without having to rewrite the supplied source code.

The major features are:

* Written in ANSI C.

* Tested on SUN SOLARIS 2 and PC BORLAND C++ 3.0.

* Supports multiple datatypes seamlessly: bit strings, integers, real
numbers, symbols (from arbitrarily sized alphabets).

* A powerful and general Genetic Algorithm (includes rank-based and
non-rank based fitness and replacement options, various forms of
fitness function normalisation, elitism, various forms of mutation
and crossover). Includes GENESYS and GENITOR algorithms as
a subset.

* Parameters can be set in a configuration file, and overruled by
command-line options and/or hard-coded program statements.

* Users can add their own configuration file parameters and/or add
additional options to existing parameters.

* Virtually all major actions in the GA can be overridden by the
user.

* A comprehensive User Manual (available in postscript and on-line
as HTML).

The SUGAL source code and manual are available by anonymous ftp
or via the World Wide Web.

The ftp address is "osiris@sund.ac.uk" ; the SUGAL files are stored
in directory /pub/sugal.

On the World Wide Web, the SUGAL home page is at:

http://osiris.sund.ac.uk/ahu/sugal/home.html

Any comments to cs0ahu@sund.ac.uk

 Dear Colleagues,

Since its formation (over nine months ago), the GANN Mailing List has been
functioning in a "digest" format, with submissions to the list getting
compiled into digests that get mailed out periodically.

This, in our opinion, has been a deterrent to "free-flowing" discussions,
defeating the very purpose of forming this list. Hence our move to make
this list "real-time". By "real-time" we mean that messages you send
to this list will not go through the process of moderation and compilation
into digests that existed earlier. The message immediately gets mailed
out to all subscribers of the list.

To help facilitate this, we have moved the GANN list to the Majordomo
server, hopefully keeping all the functioning intact. This mail reaching
you is proof-positive that you are still subscribed to the list (and
haven't been lost in the transition :-)).

If there are any hiccups caused by this move, kindly bear with us :-).

Since there is no moderation of messages on this list, please make sure
only relevant messages are sent to the list. There are currently 900
subscribers on this list and we don't unnecessarily want to waste
bandwidth. A list of broadly acceptable topics is included in
this mail (suggestions for inclusion of other topics of importance are
   more than welcome :-)).

/**** Please note the following change in addresses and update
	   your aliases etc. appropriately. ****/

To send an article or note to the subcribers on this list, send the
   message to --

If you are unsure about the relevance of a particular message to this list,
or entertain suggestions/concerns/queries, please send it to us at --

This list is dedicated to postings and discussion on issues related to
the use of Evolutionary Algorithms (Genetic Algorithms, Genetic
Programming and their variants) in the exploration of the design space
of Artificial Neural Networks -- leading to a field we choose to
call Evolutionary Design of Neural Architectures (EDNA).

The primary objective of the mailing list is to foster interaction
and sharing of new research results, publications, conference
announcements, and other useful information among researchers in this area.

A partial list of topics of particular interest includes:
Genetic Representation (Blueprints) of Neural Networks
Encoding and Decoding of Network Blueprints
        Complexity issues
        Development models
        Learning models
        Representational Bias
        Efficiency Issues
        Properties of Representation
        Experimental Results
        Theoretical Considerations

Discussions on other topics are strongly discouraged on this list,
since more appropriate medium for their expression, like newsgroups and
   other mailing lists abound.

This list is not for discussion of Genetic Algorithms in general; only
their application in evolving Neural Architectures. Please direct
questions pertaining to GAs in general to other lists specifically
devoted to discussion on GAs, or post to the newsgroup comp.ai.genetic

Currently this list has almost 900 subscribers from all over the world.

Report No. STAN-CS-TR-95-1542 - January 30, 1995

ABSTRACT

This report describes the parallel implementation of genetic
programming in the C programming language using a PC
486 type computer (running Windows) acting as a host and
a network of transputers acting as processing nodes.

Using this approach, researchers of genetic algorithms and
genetic programming can acquire computing power that is
intermediate between the power of currently available
workstations and that of supercomputers at a cost that is
intermediate between the two.

A comparison is made of the computational effort required
to solve the problem of symbolic regression of the Boolean
even-5-parity function with different migration rates.
Genetic programming required the least computational
effort with an 8% migration rate. Moreover, this
computational effort was less than that required for solving
the problem with a serial computer and a panmictic
population of the same size. That is, apart from the nearly
linear speed-up in executing a fixed amount of code
inherent in the parallel implementation of genetic
programming, parallelization delivered more than linear
speed-up in solving the problem using genetic
programming.

INTRODUCTION (SECTION 1) OF THE TECHNICAL
REPORT

Amenability to parallelization is an appealing feature of
genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, evolution
strategies, classifier systems, and genetic programming
(Holland 1975, Tanese 1989, Goldberg 1989a, Stender
1993).

The probability of success in applying the genetic
algorithm to a particular problem often depends on the
adequacy of the size of the population in relation to the
difficulty of the problem. Although many moderately sized
problems can be solved by the genetic algorithm using
currently available workstations, more substantial problems
usually require larger population sizes. Since the
computational burden of the genetic algorithm is directly
proportional to the population, more computing power is
required to solve more substantial problems.

Increases in computing power can be realized by either
increasing the speed of computation or by parallelizing the
application. Fast serial supercomputers and current parallel
supercomputers are, of course, expensive and may not be
accessible. Therefore, we focus our attention on
parallelization.

Section 2 of this report describes our search for a practical
option that provides computing power that is intermediate
between that of workstations and supercomputers at a price
(in terms of both money and programming effort) that is
intermediate between that of workstations and
supercomputers.

Section 3 then describes the successful parallel
implementation of genetic programming in the C
programming language using a PC 486 type computer
(running Windows) and a network of transputers.

Section 4 compares the computational effort required to
solve a problem using the parallel computer system with
semi-isolated subpopulations and a serial computer using
panmictic selection (i.e., where the individual to be selected
to participate in a genetic operation can be from anywhere
in the population).

Section 5 is the conclusion.

Dear Colleagues,

I am eager to hear about comparative works, if any, between
Symbolic Regression by GP, Neural Networks, Kalman Filter, and GMDH
  applied for Time Series analysis.

In fact, I am applying GP Symbolic Regression having parallel
architecture to analysis of time series in natural and economic
system. My works will be presented at the Fifteenth Annual International
Symposium on Forecasting, sponsored by the International Institute of
Forecasters and the International Association of Business Forecasters.

However, my professor requires me that in what objective points
the time series analysis based on GP-Symbolic-Regression is different
from other (conventional) methods such as Kalman Filter, GMDH ( Group
Method of Data Handling ), Neural Networks. My professor insists that
GP-Symbolic-Regression is brittle unless it has superior merits over
  other methods mentioned.

Such being the case, it would be most thankful should anyone
there could help me in getting the following :

  1) Any papers that deal with the comparative power, merits of each
methods mentioned above for time series analysis.

  2) Any repositories which contain numerical performance data done
     by the methods above.

  Many Thanks in Advance.

Anyone who helps me wil be given a hard copy of summarized works of
  my own via landmail.

  Please Help me !

Dear GANN-list,
Soo-Young Lee asked for medical application databases as benchmarks.
Try the Machine Learning Database Repository at the University of California at Irvine which
has dozens of medical data files. I dont have an email, but suggest you look at GA, NN conf
proceedings to find someone at Irvine and contact them.

Cheers,
         Hugo de Garis, ATR, Kyoto.

Dear Dr. Soo-Young Lee,

Could you please post the detailed information about
how to contact the UCI database?
I think it could be interesting for all of us in the gann-list.

Thanking you in advance,

Dear GANN,

For all those who are interested the UCI datatbases can be found at;

"UCI machine learning databases" by P.M.Murphy & D.W.Aha
  Anon ftp: /pub/machine-learning-databases on ics.uci.edu.

Some of the medical problems, plus other data sets, may be otained from the
Proben1 benchmark database, the technical report of which may be obtained
from;

  L. Prechelt. "Proben 1 - A set of neural network benchmark problems and
  benchmarking rules", Technical report 21/94.
  Anon ftp: /pub/papers/techreports/1994/ on ftp.ira.uka.de.

I hope these addresses are useful.

All the best,

                   Steve.

Several machine learning datasets including medical databases
can be found in the machine learning repository maintained
by Dr. Pazzani at UC Irvine. The ftp address is
ftp.ics.uci.edu

Login as ftp and give your login id as password. The relevant
files are in /pub/machine-learning-databases.

Good luck.

Dear GANN-list members:

In the interest of minimizing unnecessary traffic so as not to
clutter up everyone's mailbox, I would appreciate it if you
could send messages intended for specific individuals directly
to their personal email address and not reply to the entire list?
The way things are set up now, when you use "reply" on most
mailers, as a default, the message gets sent to the entire list.
So please be judicious in your use of "reply" when you respond
to messages posted to the list.

Thank you.

Vasant Honavar

Do the same for me too!

I understand I can still have access to GANN newsgroup, and therefore
there is no need to have all those email messages every time I login!

Excuse me? Look -- do you really belong on the net? STOP sending me
garbage, allright? Sending 10 messages to a list in response to
hapless fools who do not understand only complicates the matter, if
that is why you sent it. You fall into the same class of morons that
do not know the difference between reply and Reply, and who endanger
the net's free existense. I only respond this strongly because yours
is clearly not an act of ignorance.

Please grow up, or get the hell off the net.

David Andre

I have just had enough of all these stupid emails I'm receiving.
I had the beleif that this is a respectable group but as its
clear there is very little organization and management employed
to run this group.

I have submitted my unsubscribe request.

Thank you

First, I would like to apologize to those of you who received my
angry reply regarding one of the medical data base sets of 12 letters,
I meant it to go to only he, but clearly made an error in typing 'R'. My
most sincere apologies.

And, onto further signal....

I have recently joined this list, and joined as I have begun working with
Frederic Gruau and his work on cellular encoding -- evolving NNs using
Genetic Programming (tree-based GP) in which the NN is grown from a
single neuron based on the rules specified in the tree. Both the structure
and weights of the NN can be learned in this manner.

As part of our research, we are attempting to do a thorough literature
search as to other methods of learning the structure and weights for NN. We
have many citations, but are especially interested in finding out about
new work involving modular NNs or hierarchical NNs.

Thank you very much for your time.

David Andre

To All Dear GANN Readers,

I would like to STRONGLY apologize all GANN readers for the serial
responses I produced tonight. For the last 2-3 days I have received
a growing number of some pieces of casual conversations.
Tonight I found 17 messages about 'medical database' and
complains of people who checked their mail before me.
For a moment I got quite irritated of deleting these
letters every day and I sent back ALL 'mediacal database'
messages I had in my mail. Actually, I thought that none of
them would reach the public audience. Once again I terribly
apologize all Readers for this unplesant (and for me very
embarrassing) incident.

Hello,

I'd like to pose a general question to the GANN list, and would
appreciate anyone who has done work in this area to provide
some clarification. (I think this is much the same as
David Andre's posting, so I apologies if I am reiterating..)

In light of the recent "No Free Lunch" theorem findings of
Wolpert and Macready (GA Digest, vol.9, no.7) it seems that we
may only justify a search technique if the characteristics of the
problem domain suit that search algorithm. Do we have any empirical
evidence at least, to show that NNs are a good application for
GA-based optimisation?

Suggestive biological analogies aside, is GA the best approach, or
might more conventional techniques (say SA or Interated Hill Climbing)
provide better results?

Cheers,
Brendan Kitts

  Dear gann list members:

In order to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio on this list
(and to avoid frayed tempers), may we request everyone on the
list to read the instructions below on how to subscribe, unsubscribe,
post messages to the list, send messages to list managers, or to
  reply to particular individuals.

The GANN Mailing List is operated through a Majordomo server. Please
  note the following changes. Thanks.

To know more about the capabilities of Majordomo, please send e-mail to:
majordomo@cs.iastate.edu with *body* (not subject) of:
	     help

To SEND AN ARTICLE to ALL the subscribers on this list, please email the
   message to:
      gann-list@cs.iastate.edu

To REPLY TO THE ORIGINATOR OF A MESSAGE (without flooding the entire list),
please make sure that you follow whatever procedures are appropriate for
the mail program that you are using. Since different sites use different
software, there is no single procedure that willl always work. In short,
familiarize yourself with your mail program (whatever it happens to be).

If YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT THE RELEVANCE OF A PARTICULAR MESSAGE TO THIS LIST,
or have suggestions/concerns/queries, please send it to US at:
      gannadm@cs.iastate.edu or gann-list-owner@cs.iastate.edu

   To UNSUBSCRIBE:
     please send e-mail to:
majordomo@cs.iastate.edu with *body* (not subject) of:
unsubscribe gann-list [optional e-mail addr to be unsubscribed]

   To SUBSCRIBE:
     please send e-mail to:
majordomo@cs.iastate.edu with *body* (not subject) of:
subscribe gann-list [optional e-mail addr to be subscribed]

Finally, the recent switch from moderated digest mode (which enabled us
to censor at the source, a lot of junk of the sort you have recently seen
but unfortunately also discouraged much discussion in real-time because
of delays between digests) to unmoderated mode calls for the exercise
of some self-discipline and patience among the list members. So, when
you are tempted to send out a flame (however well justified it may be),
please, please, take a deep breath and count to ten. If that does not help
and you still feel like responding, please, please, don't send your
response to the entire list but only to the originator
of the offending message (and that too only if you have to). You will
find in most cases that if you just ignore such messages for a while,
the offenders get bored and just go away (this also works with requests
for information that can be readily obtained by walking over to the
nearest library or by looking up responses to FAQs on the nets).
Any time you subscribe to a mailing list,
you risk receiving messages that you would rather not have to wade through.
The best response, except perhaps in the most extreme of cases, is to use a
smart mail-sorting program or hit the delete key and go on.

CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions on how to maximize the signal-to-noise
ratio on the list (including suggestions on administrative aspects)
are welcome. But please, please, send them only to gannadm@cs.iastate.edu
and not to the entire list.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

In general, I agree with the proposition that the characteristics of
a problem domain must be well-matched to the search algorithm (broadly
speaking). This is at the heart of some issues that have been
recognized as central in artificial intelligence. In order for any
search-based approach to optimization (or in general problem solving)
to succeed:
	a. the solution sought must lie within the space being searched.
(One might call this the completeness property of the
representation used to describe the search space)
and b. the search algorithm must in fact be able to find the desired
point or points in the search space (if they indeed exist).
One might call this the completeness of the search strategy
           employed.
In addition, there are issues that have to do with representational bias
and search bias which affect the completensess as well as efficiency of
specific methods.

So, a-priori, there is no strong case to make that GA are necessarily
better than other approaches to find near-optimal NN architectures.
However, they provide a class of methods that lie between the two extremes
of pure parameter modification based methods (using hill climbing or
other techniques) that operate within a fixed network topology (and hence
may fail to satisfy completness property) and incremental network construction
algorithms on one hand and the intractable enumerative or exhaustive search
in the space of neural architectures on the other. The tradeoffs involved
across this entire spectrum of techniques remain to be characterized
through systematic emperical and theoretical study.

In "The Origins of Order", Stuart Kauffmann discuses the conditions under which
GA's are a good optimisation technique. He suggests that GA's work well when
(a) the fitness landscape is not too rough, so that the GA's "memory" held

within the population can be used to suggest likely good areas, and
(b) the fitness landscape is not too smooth, otherwise Hill Climbing will do
the job better.

This would seem to put the problem back one step, the question now being, "Can
we encode a NN in such a way that a GA can opeerat3e

 on it efficiently. To my
mind, this is why developmental algorithms may prove to be the way forwards.

Sincerely

Steve Hill

Dear All,
There has been so much criticisms and noise about GANN recently.
We all do'nt seem to remember that we are also partly responsible for
any failures/ inefficiency. The members could have made it a very
interesting group with enlightening discussions. Unfortunately I am
not in the right place or the environment to say much about myself at
the *moment*. When it comes to blaming someone it is so easy. I do not
think they deserve membership of GANN or any group because they can
find fault everywhere except in themselves. Atleast stop criticism now!

Dear Colleagues:

Thank you for the tremendous patience that most of you have shown
in the light of all the noise (intentional or otherwise) caused by
the recent switch of GANN to unmoderated mode. Some of this was
caused by people simply using "Reply" on their respective mail
programs without editing the header so that the message was directed
to individuals and not the entire list. We have made some
changes in the set up that should help minimize the noise. In
particular, the "Reply-To" does not default to "gann-list" any more
and replies go out only to the sender of the message unless you
deliberately take action to mail the message to the entire list.

This would of course mean a little more work for the people posting
the message but we believe it would minimize the noise caused by
unintentional oversight. Given the imperfect world we live in,
barring censorship, there is no way to prevent uncalled for
"subscribe" or "unsubscribe" requests or "flames" intentionally
mailed to the entire list. When that happens, it would be best if
everyone else exercises restraint in their response. If this does
not work, we will have no choice except to go back to the "moderated"
mode and we will do so if it becomes necessary.

A special word of thanks to those members who sent us suggestions,
advice and encouragement by private email.

Best Regards,

GANN list Admin.

Lots of evil messages coming down the info-way.
Let's try to educate and remain calm. People will
learn, and we will get some good research communicated.

Suggestion: let's be sure that our own e-mail address is
attached to the messages we write. Then comments can get to
individuals.

I have discovered a good method for generating "quasi-random"
numbers. Unlike pseudo-random the generators have memory
and they avoid clumps and gaps. Quasi-random numbers are
good dart-throwing simulator for Monte Carlo integration.

My students and I have been trying these for initializing
the weights of neural nets, and we got a 3-150-1 feed-forward
net that solves the 2-spirals problem. The input is (1,x1,x2),
the desired output is +1 or -1 depending on which spiral (x1,x2)
lives in. The first layer of weights were generated by the
quasi-random generator to be 150 smoothly distributed points
in the 3-cube. Those weights were FROZEN. The second layer
of weights was achieved with one shot (pseudo-inverse)
getting correct answers for all the training data (200 points
on each spiral).

The next part of the problem is to make the net smaller.
We used a genetic algorithm for this -- searched for good subsets
of the hidden layer nodes.

I will elaborate or send further info to anyone interested.

'The Integration of Genetic Algorithms, Neural Computing and
Related Adaptive Techniques with Current Engineering Practice'.

                         1ST CALL FOR PAPERS

  Plymouth
  Engineering
  Design
  Centre
                                  ACEDC'96
                             CONFERENCE CHAIRS

   Dr I C Parmee Prof M J Denham

AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE

There is a world-wide upsurge of interest from both industry and
academia in
exciting novel computer technologies that are inspired by
biological
principles and other natural processes. The Genetic Algorithm,
Neural
Computing and Cellular Automata are examples of emergent
computational
techniques which exploit co-operating elements to solve complex
problems
previously considered to be beyond the capabilities of
conventional
numerical computation. A number of specialised conferences are
 held
annually where fundamental issues in these fields are described
 and
discussed.
ACEDC'96 is the second in what is expected to be a biennial
series of
meetings aimed at addressing the rapidly developing integration of
 these
emerging computing technologies with engineering applications,
particularly
in the areas of design and control. The primary objective of the
ACEDC'96
Conference is to create a stimulating environment in which
participants can
assess the state of the art, discuss feasible future directions for
research
and applications and develop long term targets. The ultimate aim of
 this
conference series is to ensure that design engineers can take full
advantage
of these powerful computing technologies and of their
implementation upon
high performance computing platforms, as both become increasingly
available
and dominant over the next ten years and into the early part of the
21st
Century.

RELEVANT AREAS

Papers are invited which address, amongst others, the following
issues:

* How are design and control problems best formulated for the
application of
  these novel computing technologies?
* What aspects of design and control problems present difficulties for
and
limitations on the use of these technologies?
* What are the current shortcomings of the novel computing methods
in respect
of their application to real world problems?
involving the
dynamic combination of complementary computing methods,
help to solve
  present and future problems?
* How can designer intuition and experience be captured and
included in the
  process?
* How can the design engineer visualise and explain the
computational
processes, their resulting solutions and pathways to these
solutions?
* How can designer creativity be best enhanced by these
techniques?

1ST CALL FOR PAPERS

Submissions should take the form initially of extended abstracts of
1000-2000
words which fully describe how the paper will contribute to the aims
of the
conference. This will be either by addressing the issues described
above or
related issues at a conceptual level, or by describing real world
examples of
how such issues have been approached and problems overcome.
Abstracts are
invited from both industry and academia and may describe
completed work or
ongoing research. Papers will be accepted as either full papers for
 oral
presentation or short papers for poster presentation etc.

Extended abstracts should be received by 1st May 1995.
Successful authors
will be informed by 30th August 1995 and a camera-ready copy
should arrive no
later than 23rd October 1995.

  CONFERENCE ORGANISATION

The Conference will be of three days duration. Parallel sessions
will be
avoided on at least two of the three days with the aim of
generating
widespread discussion on all aspects of the meeting.

The content of each session will be designed as far as possible to
include
papers which address the issues both conceptually and through
application in
order to promote and stimulate discussion of the integration
between the
computing methods and their real-world applications. This
approach will
also assist in the identification of the generic issues involved.

Keynote speakers have been invited to present papers which will
 further
stimulate and focus discussion of the major issues in the field.

Delegate fees will be kept to a minimum and are unlikely to exceed
 o180.00
for the attendance on all three days, the aim being to provide
high-level
  information exchange at low cost.

Dear GANN:

I was the guy who first asked for the medical databases, and feel responsible
for all the mass in connection with "Re: medical database". I apologize
command in my email system went all the gann list instead of the specific
sender. I guess many others also had same problem.

I was informed of several medical databases, and many
people asked me to distribute those information. However I do not want to
bother many not-interested people again. Instead I will set up a file
for the information and list of interested people (with e-mail address),
will be able to make anonymous ftp of a file "med-info" from machine
"cnsl.kaist.ac.kr" in directory "/pub/medical". If not convenient, please
just send me an e-mail to "sylee@ee.kaist.ac.kr".

I hope this is the last "irritating" mail on the medical database.

Best regards,

Soo-Young Lee

Many thanks to the GANN readers who wrote to me asking for
more information -- it encouraged me to get off the dime and
set up my ftp site properly. Three of my papers may be obtained
from
       ftp.cs.rit.edu
       /pub/pga/*.ps.Z

The document, quasi_NN.ps.Z, describes the network building method
I mentioned in my previous posting.

I generate quasirandom numbers using fractional parts of integer
multiples of high-dimensional analogues of the golden mean. This
is described in the document, mgm.ps.Z.

Another viewpoint of that sequence of numbers is that they are
"shuffled pixels" (i.e., we work with a finite raster rather
than an infininte continuum). This technique, with applications
to image processing is in the document, lps.ps.Z. ("lps" denotes
"linear pixel shuffling")

There is also a read_me file in the directory with abstracts for the
three papers.

I hope you can access these, understand what I'm trying to get across,
and enjoy them. I would enjoy discussing these with GANN colleagues.

Best wishes!

Dear GANN members:

NOTE: Send your replies to 70673.1554@compuserve.com

I'd like to offer all of you a free demo of our commercial product, the
NeuroGenetic Optimizer (NGO) for Microsoft Windows you can "play" with. The
current version of the NGO "genetically engineers" backprop (quick/fast prop
actually) neural networks by selecting which inputs and neural structure to use
to best perform Modeling, Classification or Diagnosis depending on the
application type the user has at hand. The demo supports 5 inputs and 10
outputs and up to 256 hiddens, so you can actually do simple, yet useful things
with the demo using your own data.

I'd like to assure list members that this isn't a commercial, but rather an
offer to have something to "goof around with".

If you are interested in a demo, send me (PRIVATELY PLEASE) your postal mailing
address and I'll drop one in the mail. To assure non-commercialness (a word?),
I'll not send any pricing or order forms or any other of that hype-filled
marketing fluff stuff, just a disk and an instruction sheet on how to install if
you reference "GANN" somehow in your.note, so I can distiguish between all the
commercial requests we're getting via the internet.

For those of you with Compuserve access, the demo is in the AIExpert forum in
the "Neural Nets" library and in the Investor's forum in the "Demos and Info"
library. Just search on "NGO" or "BioComp".

We're not an ftp site (yet), so I can't offer you download capabilities.

Thanks!

Carl Cook

Can anyone direct me to a set of useful references concerned with the
following:
(a) how Markov and non-Markov models for GAs can be used to visualise the
progression of a GA;
(b) other ways of visualising the search trajectories and population
compositions related to the progression of a GA?

Many thanks in advance,

I just made available a new paper that surveys current
literature on how to use EAs for ANN design and training. It has
been presented at the 1st Nordic Workshop on Genetic Algorithms and its
Applications, Vaasa, Finland, January 1995.

The paper can be downloaded from our ftp server

or via www:

Abstract:

"Evolutionary Algorithms for Neural Network Design and Training"

Neural networks and genetic algorithms
are two relatively young research areas that were subject to a steadily
growing interest during the past years. Both models are inspired by
nature, but whereas neural networks are concerned with learning of an
individual (phenotypic learning), evolutionary algorithms deal with a
population's adaptation to a changing environment (genotypic
learning).
This paper focuses on the intersection of neural networks and
evolutionary computation, namely on how evolutionary algorithms can be
used to assist neural network design and training. The purpose of the
paper is to set forth the general considerations that have to be made
when designing an algorithm in this area and to give an overview on how
researchers addressed these issues in the past.

Sincerely
Juergen

Actually many researchers argue that conventional GAs (and especially the
crossover operator) are are not very well suited to ANN optimization.

The reason for that is the so called competing-conventions problem which
means that the same (phenotypic) network can be represented by quite
a number of different genotypes. This not only increases the search
space significantly but also reduces the effectiveness of the crossover
operator since crossover between different representations usually leads
to very poor offspring.

For more details and pointers to literature, see e.g. "Evolutionary
Algorithms for Neural Network Design and Training", a paper I just
made available via ftp and www.

See next mail for announcement.

Cheers
Juergen

There are several special sessions organized for the 3rd IEEE ICEC '96;
so far these include:

*********************************************************************
"Constrained Optimization, Constraint Satisfaction and EC"
*********************************************************************

Evolutionary Computation has proved its merit in treating difficult problems
in, for example, numerical optimization and machine learning. Nevertheless,
problems where constraints on the search space (i.e., on the candidate
solutions) play an important role have received relatively little attention.
In real-world problems, however, the presence of constraints seems to be
rather the rule than the exception. The class of constrained problems can be
divided into Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP) and Constrained
Optimization Problems (COP). This special session addresses both subclasses,
and aims to explore the extent to which EC can usefully tackle problems of
these kinds.

The session is organized by
Gusz Eiben, chair (Utrecht University, gusz@cs.ruu.nl)
Dave Corne (University of Edinburgh,dave@aifh.ed.ac.uk)
Jurgen Dorn (Technical University of Vienna, dorn@vexpert.dbai.tuwien.ac.at)
Peter Ross (University of Edinburgh, peter@aisb.ed.ac.uk)

Submission:

Four (4) copies of complete (6 pages maximum) papers, preferably in PostScript
form, should be submitted no later than December 15, 1995 to:

*********************************************************************
  "Evolutionary Artificial Neural Networks"
*********************************************************************

Evolutionary Artificial Neural Networks (EANNs) can be considered as a
combination of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and evolutionary search
algorithms. Three levels of evolution in EANNs have been studied recently,
i.e., the evolution of connection weights, architectures, and learning rules.
Major issues in the research of EANNs include their scalability,
generalisation ability and interactions among different levels of evolution.
This special session will serve as a forum for both researchers and
practitioners to discuss these important issues and exchange their latest
research results/ideas in the area.

This special session is organized by X. Yao (xin@cs.adfa.oz.au).
Prospective authors are invited to submit four (4) copies of their papers to
the following address no later than 20 December 1995. (Please do not include
author's information, e.g., name and address, in three of four submitted
copies):

Ph: +61 6 268 8819
Fax: +61 6 268 8581
Email: xin@csadfa.cs.adfa.oz.au

All papers will be reviewed. Notification of acceptance/rejection will be sent
out by 20 February 1996. The camera-ready copy must be submitted by 10 April
1996 for inclusion in the conference proceedings.

*********************************************************************
  "Evolutionary Robotics and Automation"
*********************************************************************

More and more researchers are applying evolutionary computation techniques
to challenging problems in robotics and automation, where classical methods
fail to be effective. In addition to being vastly applicable to many hard
problems, evolutionary concepts inspire many researchers as well as users
to be fully creative in inventing their own versions of evolutionary
algorithms for the specific needs of different domains of problems.
This special session serves as a forum for exchanging research results in
this growing interdisciplinary area and for encouraging further exploration
of the fusion between evolutionary computation and intelligent robotics and
automation.

This special session is organized by J. Xiao (xiao@uncc.edu).
Four (4) copies of complete (6 pages maximum) papers should be submitted
no later than December 15, 1995 to:

Jing Xiao
Department of Computer Science
University of North Carolina - Charlotte
Charlotte, NC 28223
Phone: (704) 547-4883
Fax: (704) 547-3516
E-mail: xiao@uncc.edu

All papers will be reviewed, and authors will be notified of the inclusion
of their papers in the special session by February 15, 1996.

Any questions regarding this special session should be directed to
J. Xiao at the above address.

The goal of automatic programming is to create, in an automated way, a

programming extends the genetic algorithm to the domain of computer
programs. In genetic programming, populations of program are genetically
bred to solve problems. Genetic programming is a domain-independent
method for evolving computer programs that solves, or approximately
solves, a variety of problems from a variety of fields, including many
benchmark problems from machine learning and artificial intelligence such
as problems of control, robotics, optimization, game playing, and symbolic
regression (i.e., system identification, concept learning). Early versions
of genetic programming evolved programs consisiting of only a single part
(i.e., one main program).

  "Self-adaptation in evolutionary algorithms"
*********************************************************************

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) with the ability to adapt internal
strategic parameters (like population size, mutation distribution,
type of recombination operator, selective pressure etc.)
during the search process usually find better solutions than
variants with fixed strategic parameters. Self-adaptation is very
useful if different (fixed) parameter settings produce large
differences in the solution quality of the algorithm. Most
experiences are available for (real-coded) EAs whose individuals
adapt their mutation distributions (or step sizes). Here, the
property to adjust the step size is induced by competetive
pressure among individuals. Evidently, self-adapting mechanisms can
be realized by competing subpopulations as well. The potential of
those EAs is essentially unexplored.

This special session is organized by Guenter Rudolph
(rudolph@ls11.informatik.uni-dortmund.de) and is intended to serve
as a forum to discuss new ideas and to address the question of a
theoretical treatment of self-adapting mechanisms.

Four (4) copies of complete papers (6 pages maximum) should be
submitted no later than December 15, 1995 to:

  "Evolutionary algorithms and fuzzy systems"
*********************************************************************

Fuzzy sets (FS) and evolutionary algorithms have been already successfully
applied to many areas including fuzzy control and fuzzy clustering. There
are a number of facets of symbiosis between the technologies of FS and GA.
On one hand evolutionary computation enriches the optimization
environment for fuzzy systems. On the other, fuzzy sets supply a new
macroscopic and domain-specific insight into the fundamental mechanisms of
evolutionary algorithms (including fuzzy crossover, fuzzy reproduction,
fuzzy fitness function, etc.). The objective of this session is to foster
further interaction between researchers actively engaged in FS and GAs. The
session will provide a broad forum for exchanging ideas between academe and
industry and discussing recent pursuits in the area.

This special session is organized by Witold Pedrycz (pedrycz@ee.umanitoba.ca).
Prospective authors are encouraged to submit four (4) copies of their
papers (6 pages maximum) by December 15, 1995 to:

Evolutionary Programming Society Award for Best Student Paper
-------------------------------------------------------------

In order to foster student contributions and encourage exceptional scholarship
in evolutionary programming and closely related fields, the Evolutionary
Programming Society awards one exceptional student paper submitted to the
Annual Conference on Evolutionary Programming. The award carries a $500 cash
prize and a plaque signifying the honor.

To be eligible for the award, all authors of the paper must be full-time
students at an accredited college, university or other educational
institution. Submissions to be considered for this award must be clearly marked
at the top of the title page with the phrase "CONSIDER FOR STUDENT AWARD." In
addition, the paper should be accompanied by a cover letter stating that (1)
the paper is to be considered for the student award (2) all authors are
currently enrolled full-time students at a university, college or other
educational institution, and (3) that the student authors are responsible for
the work presented. Only papers submitted to the conference and marked as
indicated will be considered for the award. Late submissions will not be
considered. Officers of the Evolutionary Programming Society, students under
their immediate supervision, and their immediate family members are not
eligible.

Judging will be made by officers of the Evolutionary Programming Society or by
an Awards Committee appointed by the president. Judging will be based on the
perceived technical merit of the student's research to the field of
evolutionary programming, and more broadly to the understanding of
self-organizing systems. The Evolutionary Programming Society and/or the Awards
Committee reserves the right not to give an award in any year if no eligible
student paper is deemed to be of award quality. Presentation of the Student
Paper Award will be made at the conference.
