General Guidelines
Beginning with the 1993-95 General Catalog all students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, whose native language is English must have 3 years of a single foreign language in high school or 2 semesters of foreign language at the college level. Admission requirements remain 2 years of the same foriegn language in high school
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has established requirements in four General Education Requirement (GER) areas. Departments may elect to further restrict student choices within the groups, and/or require additional credits in any of the GER areas. The Department of Computer Science imposes additional requirements in Groups II (Communication), III-A (Math), III-B (Science) and restricts choices in Groups I (Arts and Humanities), II (Communication), III-A (Math), and III-B (Science).
No orientation courses, independent study courses (usually numbered 290 or 490), cooperative courses, seminars in the sciences, or courses numbered 500 and above are eligible for use in the General Education Groups. Experimental courses must be approved for use in the groups by the LAS Curriculum Committee before they may be used to fulfill the GER. All courses taken to fulfill the GER must be completed on a graded basis; they may not be courses offered on a Satisfactory-Fail (S-F) basis nor may they be courses taken Pass-Not Pass (P-NP). If a course acceptable for satisfying these requirements is cross-listed then a student may take it under either course designator. If such a course under either cross-listing is used to satisfy a requirement in the department of the student's first major, it may not also be used to satisfy these requirements. Interdisciplinary courses may be used to satisfy requirements in any group for which they have been approved, but a student may not apply the same course to more than one GER group.
Higher level courses that use these courses for prerequisites can also be used to statisfy the group requirements.
