Iowa State University offers new Software Engineering Degree20 Dec, 2006
The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, has approved a new B.S. degree in Software Engineering at Iowa State University. The Department of Computer Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering will jointly administer the new degree program.
According to Professor and Computer Science Dept. Chair Carl Chang, there has been a continuous joint effort since 1999 between the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the two largest professional associations in computing, to develop model curricula in various aspects of computing, including computer science, computer engineering, information systems, and software engineering. Carl Chang spearheaded the initial project to complete the computer science volume of the joint task force report in 2001 (see http://www.computer.org/portal/cms_docs_ieeecs/ieeecs/education/cc2001/cc2001.pdf). The software engineering volume was completed in 2004 (to view the report, see http://sites.computer.org/ccse/SE2004Volume.pdf).
Software engineering has been recognized as the best job in America. See http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bestjobs/index.html.
