Jacob Wittenauer Internship at Cerner Corporation

Jacob Wittenauer spent a summer in 2008 as an intern at Cerner Corporation in Kansas City. "You wouldn't have known I was an intern," he says, "they treated me just as if I was a full-time employee." After meeting representatives from Cerner at the LAS Career fair, Jacob was offered an internship for the summer of 2008. As a member of a software engineering team working on software products for hospitals and medical clinics, Jacob most enjoyed learning what it would be like to work as a computer scientist in the industry--"it isn't just sitting and programming by yourself. You work with a great team of people who you really learn a lot from."
In summer 2009, he did a second internship with Cerner, developing project management skills by assisting in project releases, programmed and collaborated with a skilled team of engineers, gained experience in developing automated software testing tools, and also was able to serve as a high school intern mentor. "The experience not only rewarding in respect to the skills I acquired, but they also provided numerous social activities with the interns and full-time staff that made this internship successful the second time around." Jacob said.
When asked about the fall semester and future plans, he remarks, "Currently I am a Senior. If you are not involved in one of my numerous group projects, you can attend a Computer Science club meeting or come watch me perform in Iowa State Theatre productions. I still have not decided on whether I will enter the industry or attend graduate school upon my May 2010 graduation."
