timeline of computer events. My lecture notes for the "history" lectures. Super brief timeline.
Languages Companies -- not completely edited/sourced
Misc terms: parse, compile, interpret; binary (file), source code; debug; high-level language, low-level language, imperative language; comment.
architecture Simple model of a computer and binary/hex/octal.

UNIX

UNIX 1 basic commands, paths, wildcards
vi(m) comments.
UNIX 2 redirection, pipes; find, grep, reg-exps
scripting in sh/bash
substitutions -- using s/ancient/old/ in sed, vi (and .procmail).
Job control background/foreground jobs, stopped vs. terminated.

Misc unix commands (including tar/gzip).

HTML/web stuff

Applications

Spreadsheet
PowerPoint Not in depth, but all most people will need.
Visual Basic -- the microsoft-only version of forms and javascript
LaTeX document thing.tex has basic LaTeX info. It produced pdf document thing.pdf.

The computer survival school (css.ait.iastate.edu; there really is no www) has short, free (to ISU students) classes on whichever computer tools students seems to be most interested in learning about: Flash, JavaScript, PowerPoint, DreamWeaver, ... . There are a boatload of on-line notes, from those classes. Not part of cs104 at all.
