• Course Summary: This course aims at providing graduate students an opportunity to know the state-of-the-art of security and privacy research in wireless networks and P2P systems. Hopefully, this course could also initiate some research studies for those with interest in this area. A tentative outline is as follows:
  • Basic concepts of wireless networks and P2P systems (2.5~3 wks)
    • Cellular networks, mobile IP, wireless LAN
    • Mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks
    • P2P systems
  • Introduction to modern cryptography (1~1.5 wks)
  • Security and privacy in sensor networks (5 wks)
    • Key management and message authentication
    • Securing data aggregation, storage, and dissemination
    • Privacy and anonymity
    • Intrusion detection
    • Securing localization & time synchronization
  • Security and fairness in mobile ad hoc networks (~2 wks)
    • Key management and secure routing
    • Incentive/enforcement of collaborations
    • Mobility vs. security
  • Security, privacy and fairness in P2P systems (~3 wks)
    • Multicast security and Key management
    • Privacy and anonymity
    • Trust and reputation
    • Others

  The instructors will lecture the first two parts (for about four weeks). For parts 3-5, students will read, write critiques, and present a selected list of cutting-edge papers. Students will develop term papers. Each term paper could be a research paper with problem statement and solutions, or a literature survey on a specific topic. Two students may collaborate on a research paper, while a survey must be finished by only one student. Students are encouraged to discuss with the instructors frequently on topic selection, problem definition, and solution development. No textbook. Handouts will be distributed in class. The paper list will be announced.

• Grading Policy
  • Critiques of the assigned reading: 15%
    • Each student must write and submit critiques (one or two pages) for at least 5 papers picked from the paper list. The critique for a paper must be submitted before the paper is presented.
  • Presentations (3 papers for each student): 40%
  • Class Participation: 5%
  • Term Paper
    • Option I (research paper) 40%+
      • Problem definition: 20%
      • Solutions: 20%
      • Bonus (based on the quality of the paper)
    • Option II (literature survey) 40%
