This refers to the document Architecture of a database system that
is accessible through CourseInfo page. A new section Buffer Allocation to
Support ReadPage Operation has been added. This clarifies issues raised in
class about Buffer Manager in the current project. Only one centralized pool of
buffers is to be used. The buffer pool is instantiated and started only once,
when the database is started. Iterators do not instantiate buffer pool(s),
rather all of them share the same buffer pool. Also, note that the concept of
buffer replacement policy is hypothesized. I advise that you implement LRU.

A course is much more fun for everyone when there is greater
participation in class. Please bring your questions. At the beginning of a
class, even if I forget to ask you, please feel free to interrupt me to raise
your questions. Also please try to participate in class discussions and ask
questions as they occur to you. I follow this open policy in all my UG and
grad courses.
It would also help if you do not do other work while attending
the class. This creates a very bas atmosphere. In particular, please do not use
notebook computers in class. If you use notebook computers ONLY to take notes in
the class, please talk to me after the class so that I may make exceptions.
You should consider collaborative learning essential and this
requires your participation in good faith. You should not merely become
listeners in class. In this course there are no tests and final examination.
This does not release you from your responsibility to participate. I hope I see
a significant improvement in coming days on this front.
