Computational Infrastructure


The Department of Computer Science provides a variety of platforms to meet your computing needs. A full list can be found on this comparison chart, but the most commonly used systems are described below.

Windows Remote Desktop Servers

Formerly called "Terminal Servers", we run an major "Remote Desktop Services" cluster:

To connect, just open your Remote Desktop Client (mstsc.exe, rdesktop, freerdp, etc.) and login with the appropriate username/password pair.

Linux Secure Shell Servers

We run two major "Secure Shell" (SSH) Linux servers: and Both use your ISU username/password pair. The pyrite server is preferred for most day-to-day activities.



Online Labs

SSH gives you an text-based terminal. If you need a GUI interface, connect to our Linux VDI Lab.
