Dr. Long Nguyen

After earning a B.S. and M.A. in physics from the University of North Carolina and the University of Virginia, Dr. Long completed his PH.D. in Computer Science at Iowa State University in 1975. When speaking of his time in Ames, Dr. Long recalls the wonderful support he received from extraordinary teachers like Dr. Robert Stewart and Mr. Wayne Ostendorf.

Following his education, Dr. Long went on to have a successful career at IBM and as a college professor at the University of Saigon and Georgetown University. In 1985, Dr. Long established Pragmatics, Inc. Pragmatics provides application programming services to government agencies. Their pursuit is to be a technologically focused organization, which is recognized for their quality of work and satisfaction of clients. Their approach has led them to successfully completing over 170 projects for 60 different clients in the federal government and industry. Since 1997, Pragmatics Inc. has been the prime contractor for eight government contracts that total over 5 billion dollars.

GoldSea Magazine recently recognized Dr. Long as one of America's top 100 Asian Entrepreneurs. Factors used in the evaluation were annual revenues, profitability, impact on the industry, revenue growth, and prospects for future success. Dr. Long was ranked eightieth out of 80,000 Asian entrepreneurs actively conducting business in the United States.

Dr. Nguyen expressed his appreciation to this department with generous contributions. In November, 2001, he gave $100,000 through stock transfer option in the Computer Science Development Endowment Fund. In September, 2003, Dr. Nguyen and Kimmy, his wife, gave an additional $125,000 to establish the following endowment funds:

The first Robert Stewart Distinguished Lectureship will be given to Dr. Benjamin W. Wah who is currently the Franklin W. Woeltge Professor of Engineering and a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Coordinated Science Laboratory of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, IL. He will present a talk on Nonlinear Optimization in Planning and Scheduling on April 22, 2004 at 3:30 PM.

The department wants to thank Dr. Nguyen for his generosity and strong support to computer science education and research at ISU.
