Career Services, Career Fairs, and Internships

There is a couple of ways to get your foot in the door with prospective companies looking for interns and full time hires. As a Computer Science student you have the advantage of being in the LAS college but also having a Engineering college influence. This means that as a computer science student you can look for employment at either the LAS college career fair or at the Engineering Career fair. These career fairs are put on by the LAS Career Services and by the Engineering Career Services respectively.

How They Work
Career services work in conjunction with companies looking for students and students who need to gain experience. They do this by hosting career fairs and by collecting resumes from students, forming a database that the companies search from and setting up interviews. They also offer a wide variety of other services from resume advice to interviewing clinics. They do not however contact you to set these things up. As a student it is your responsibility to get into contact with career services and get your name on their lists.

Career Fairs
Both the LAS college and the Engineering college host separate career fairs in the spring and the fall. Career fairs are the number one way to get an internship or a full time job. Each fair has over a hundred companies looking to hire students. They are usually either held in Hilton Colliseum or in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. The fall career fairs are usually held in late September and the spring fairs in February. Even if you are not currently looking for a job, it is a good idea to go to one of these to get a feel for what they are like and what types of things will be expected of you when you actually are looking for a job.

Pre-Select Lists
Pre-select lists are another way for students to get jobs with employers. Career services collects resumes and allows companies to search them and directly set up interviews with prospective employees. In order to be considered for one of these interviews, you must sign up at with career services and submit your resume to the companies that you qualify for.

Visit either one of these web sites to find out more information and to find great tips on resume building, interview hints, or just to see what all they offer. Remember it is never to early to start to think about summer work.
