Colorectal cancer is the second cause of cancer deaths
behind lung cancer in the United
States. Colonoscopy is becoming the most
important screening tool for colorectal cancer. In current medical practice, an
endoscopist performs a manual diagnostic by interpreting video data generated
from a tiny video camera at the tip of the endoscope during a colonoscopic
procedure. The video data are not typically captured for real-time or
post-procedure reviews and analyses. The goals of this project are to (i) conduct research in advanced capturing, analysis and
retrieval of videos from endoscopic procedures for important clinical content
and (ii) develop reliable and user-friendly software employing the new
inventions to help improve quality of healthcare.
